Chapter Seventeen

The sounds emanating from Talia are shrill and agonizing, like the sounds of a wounded animal. Her hands are at her face, digging her fingernails into her eyes. Eva perches at her side, trying to calm her down.

“Talia, Talia? What’s wrong?” she asks, gripping her arm. She tries repeatedly and unsuccessfully to pull Talia's hands away from her face.

“My eyes. My eyes. They’re burning,” yells Talia. Her screams transform into a moaning wail. By now, everyone in the room is awake and encroaching upon her bedside, observing her distress. Irritation rises up in me.

“Why is everyone standing around?” I ask, as I push my way towards Talia. “Why isn't anyone going to get help?”

A couple of people rush out of the room. A few minutes later, Sgt. Phillips appears with a couple of medics. They briefly examine Talia and try to coax her into removing her hands. When she doesn't comply, they place her on a stretcher and wheel her out of the room. Eva and I follow closely behind.

We sit in the empty infirmary waiting room for at least a half an hour, hoping someone will give us information about Talia. Well, I sit. Eva paces around the room with worry evident on her face. When I ask her to sit down, she refuses.

“You know, I saw something like this when we were in the isolation tank,” she says. “I had a vision of Talia. Her eyes were on fire.”

“What? I thought you said you only saw strange lights.”

“I lied,” she says. “I’ve been having all sorts of horrible visions lately—while I'm awake, in my dreams. I don't know what they mean.”

I remember my dream about the little girl with the dirty face warning me of danger. Are my dreams and Eva’s visions somehow related? Before I can mention it to her, the door to the waiting room opens. Alex, Sam, and Micah charge into the room looking concerned. Alex’s eyes lock on mine and his body physically relaxes.

“Raven, what happened? We heard something bad happened to one of you. We came as soon as we heard,” he says. He sits in the chair next to me and wraps his arm around my shoulder.

“It’s Talia. Something's wrong with her. She woke up screaming and they took her away. Now no one’s telling us anything.”

As if on cue, Dr. Young walks into the room and everyone looks up at him expectantly.

Eva stops pacing the room and asks, “What’s happening with Talia? Is she all right?”

Dr. Young holds up a hand to silence everyone and says, “Private James is sedated and resting comfortably. She is going to be fine. She’s just feeling the effects of the serum.”

“What do you mean ‘just feeling the effects’?” demands Eva. “I thought you said the serum wasn’t supposed to harm any of us.”

“Yes. I know what I said and that is still correct,” he says, a little irritated. “The serum has started working on her and she needs time to adjust. We will keep her here in the infirmary until she has stabilized.
